We squirreled away 3 barrels from the 2014 vintage, bottled it in January 2020, and its ready! It’s a wine that will ease the chill of these early Spring evenings, compliment a cigar on the deck, or perfect your favorite dessert. Only 75 cases made from our Norton Grape base, it’s 21% alcohol and 10% residual sugar. Aged 5 years in a combination of French oak wine barrels and American oak brandy/bourbon barrels, it’s delicious!
Aromas of caramel, butterscotch and toasted coconut. Flavors of toasted hazelnut, creme brulee, and vanilla.
The Norton for this wine comes from our Glenway vineyard. The site lies at 800' elevation. Soils consists of green stone, clay and shale.
Norton grapes are picked quite ripe, destemmed and fermented in tank. Once the fermentation reaches the desired residual sugar level the wine is fortified with 190 proof brandy to preserve the sweetness and take the alcohol to 18%. The wine is aged for 2 years in new whisky barrels, 2 years in neutral whisky barrels then finished for a year in neutral wine barrels.
2012 was an respectable growing season. Spring was quite wet but we had a hot July and August which ripened everything nicely. Grapes were picked a bit later than in previous vintages. Cab Franc and Chardonnay stood out.
