Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Aromas of toasted marshmallow, candied almond and green apple. Flavors of bartlett pear, green apple and brioche.
Vineyard Notes
The fruit for this wine came from two vineyards. They first sits at ~850ft with a slight northern slope. Soil is primarily decomposed green stone and montmorillonite clay. 2/3 of the vines were 3 years old, 1/3 of the vines were 17 years old. The second vineyard sits between 900' and 1200' elevation. Southeast aspect, with 10% grade. Rocky soil comprised of shale, limestone and clay.
Production Notes
Chardonnay grapes were picked, pressed and then the juice was settled in tank over night. The juice was then racked to barrel for fermentation. The barrels were all French oak, 25% new oak. Roughly 40% of the barrels completed malolactic fermentation. The wine aged for 10 months on the fermentation lees with monthly stirring to develop richness and depth.
Winemaker Notes
2015 was a good vintage in Virginia with consistently warm, dry weather throughout the growing season. The fruit came in with good phenolics, and balanced chemistry. Whites were picked about 2 weeks earlier than previous years, but with optimal ripeness.
