Musical artist and wine lover Marie Miller is proud to offer her first signature bottling, Shieldmaiden. Reflecting her admiration for strong female characters, the label bears the coat of arms of the original tomboy - Joan of Arc, and the name of the wine pays tribute to J.R.R.Tolkien’s beautiful but headstrong Eowyn, the Lady of Rohan. Like the label, the wine itself is a perfect combination of elegance and strength. Aromatic Virginia Cabernet Franc and earthy California Cabernet Sauvignon grapes intertwine to create a gracefully fearless and undeniably delicious glass of wine.
Aromas of fig, rhubarb and dark fruit. Flavors of dried plum, leather and tobacco leaf.
Lake county, CA and Rappahannock County, VA: elvation 800', clay and shale.
Fruit was destemmed with no crushing and pumped into tank and bins. 2-4 punchdowns or pumpovers a day. Allowed to age on skins for 7-12 days then pressed off. Wine settled in tank then racked to French and American oak barrels, ~40% new barrels.
2015 was a good vintage in Virginia with consistently warm, dry weather throughout the growing season. The fruit came in with good phenolics, and balanced chemistry. Whites were picked about 2 weeks earlier than previous years, but with optimal ripeness. Reds came in with excellent flavors and sound skin integrity.
