Our Story

Our family vineyard, with roots dating back to 1571, has found its home in the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

The Delmare Family

Nearly 40 years ago, John Delmare and his wife, Marialisa, set out on a heartfelt mission to raise their family on a farm, deeply connected to the land and each other. Inspired by Marialisa's centuries-old family history in farming and fruit packing that dates back to 1571 in Croatia, then California and now Virginia, they chose Saratoga Vineyards in California's Santa Cruz Mountains to develop their passion for winemaking. Surrounded by 90-year-old vines and a historic redwood forest, they cultivated a love for both their family business and the vibrant life it fostered for their children.

Driven by a desire for a wholesome, family-friendly environment, they relocated to the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in 1998, where they discovered a burgeoning wine industry and a nurturing community. At Glenway Farm in Rappahannock County, their children joyfully participated in planting vineyards, contributing to a legacy that now spans twelve siblings.

Over the last 30 years, the Delmare family has transformed the historic Glenway 100-acre farm, cultivating not only traditional varietals but also adapting to Virginia's unique terroir to produce exceptional wines. They are deeply committed to sustainability, honoring the earth by employing environmentally responsible practices that enhance the health of their vineyards and the surrounding ecosystem. Rappahannock Cellars, celebrating its 25th year of winemaking, prides itself on crafting old-world style wines that reflect the region’s character, nurtured by a dedicated team.

Today, this multi-generational family farming adventure is led by two of their twelve children, Kelly and Teresa, who carry forward the family legacy with passion and dedication. At their welcoming tasting room, the Delmares invite visitors to share in their family's love for viticulture, hoping to foster new relationships while sharing the fruits of their labor and love.
